Allotment Of The Year 2015
The allotment of the year competition has now been judged and won by Angela Brown with William Lees and Adrian Scullion second and third respectively. The children’s first prize was awarded jointly to Sarah Lees and Reece Brown – congratulations! We had a record entry of children’s plots this year and hopefully that will continue and they will grow into fully fledged allotmenteers.
Wildflower Plot
The Wildflower Plot is looking fantastic with a great variety of wildflowers attracting pollenating insects. The bench and wrought iron arch has been installed and the rustic furniture/sculptures will be completed within the next few weeks. Please feel free to walk around the plot, look at the flowers and sit on the bench to admire the view – sunset is a particularly good time to go!
POP UP SHOP at the Wharf on Sunday 22nd June 2 - 5pm
As part of the Wildflower plot fundraising the "allotmenteers" are running a "pop up shop" selling produce, plants, cards and gifts made by the children at pre - school. Hope to see you there!
Wildflower plot
A sub committee of the Morley Allotment Association and a couple of volunteers have been given permission to clear and tidy this long overgrown area of the allotments. Our aim is to transform it into a communal wildlife plot which will be of benefit to the allotment plot holders as we aim to encourage native wildlife.
• The children from the village school and pre-school are interested in learning about the wildlife around them and they will be encouraged to use this plot as part of their school work.
• Villagers in general can enjoy looking at the plants we have planted and watch the progress of the Garden.
• It is hoped to raise some funds to purchase a bench for people to sit on and enjoy this Garden.
This project will take time, hard work and lots of fundraising to create. We are sure the people of Welford will give us their full support.
In the meantime, please enjoy our (hopefully!!) summer wild flower display for this year, designed especially to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, and to remember all those from our village who fought and gave their lives. We should have a sea of poppies this summer which will help to remind people of the sacrifices our forebears made for us. A representative from the British Legion will be placing a named cross for each person from Welford who sacrificed their lives in this war.
There is a selection for photographs in the gallery showing the progress of the project.

Hedge Planting
It was certainly a case of many hands make light work on Sunday 18th November 2012 at Morley's allotments. Twelve "allotmenteers" and one six year called Sarah planted a new wildlife hedge at the bottom of the allotments. The trees, a mixture of blackthorn, oak, birch and hawthorn were provided courtesy of The Woodland Trust in celebration of the Queens Diamond Jubilee this year. Many thanks to those who gave up their time for their hard work in preparing and organising the event.
A glass of mulled wine and a mince pie went down very well at the end. William and Sue Lees (Members of the allotment committee) |
